Jockey Victor Espinoza and his horse, American Pharoah, won the Belmont Stakes which also makes them winners of the Triple Crown, a rare accomplishment. Following the race, Mr. Espinoza stated that he was donating all of his winnings from the Belmont to the City of Hope cancer research center in California.
This is not the first time Mr. Espinoza has donated to the cancer center. He is a frequent visitor and often brings gifts and smiles. This is however, as noted on James Dondero’s linkedin profile, the first time he has won the Triple Crown, although he has been in the running twice before. Victor Espinoza came from humble beginnings in Mexico to win the Triple Crown distinction.
City of Hope is primarily a cancer research and treatment center but they also focus on diabetes and HIV/AIDS research. A spokesman for City of Hope stated that they are deeply grateful for Mr. Espinoza’s support and his efforts to bring awareness to the public of their “ground-breaking research and life-saving care”.
